DG South launch their first UX event!

We know how hard it can be in the UX space to stand out from the crowd and grab the attention of a busy Hiring Manager, so Digital Gurus’ UX recruiters, Grace Craigie-Williams and Alex Cytowska, launched an exclusive Portfolio Workshop to support Junior to Mid-Level UXers in creating a kick-ass portfolio.

The aim of the event was for attendees to leave armed with a wealth of tips, tricks and tools to enhance their UX portfolio, while also having the ‘how to’ knowledge to confidently go after their dream role.

Throughout the evening, we were fortunate to have the expertise of Helen West, Principal UX Consultant from FoolProof, who presented her top tips and advice from her experience within the industry. Going through her biggest CV pet-peeves (that rhymes) as well as her ultimate must-haves, here’s some of the main takeaways from the workshop…

  • Your portfolio itself IS a UX Project; so think of yourself as a brand
  • Think about your audience and their goals
  • Quality over quantity - it doesn’t matter if you don’t have much to show, it’s about your approach and how you present that project
  • Be honest and clear about your involvement on a project
  • Don’t overuse terminology and always check for typos
  • Stay up to date with latest trends
  • Document every project you work on
  • Don’t be afraid to show your “failures” and how you achieved the final result

UX Recruitment Specialist Grace then took to the stage offering advice from a recruiter’s point of view, to help guests understand the process behind landing a great role within UX. From sharing CV tips and the many benefits of working with recruiters, to accelerating their job search.

After an abundance of pizza (another takeaway to the list) and the chance to network, Helen spent invaluable one-to-one time with each guest, offering tailored feedback on their personal portfolio.

“Thanks for giving me the opportunity to join the workshop Grace and Digital Gurus. It was great to meet and help such a lovely and engaged group of budding designers. I loved it.”

Our guests had a great time too! Here’s what they had to say:

“I enjoyed being able to converse with people in similar positions and getting to hear about their experiences. The advice from the Recruiters was invaluable, it was great to learn about the selection process first-hand.”

“I enjoyed the networking opportunity. I liked the fact that it was a small group, and everyone was very welcoming.”

“It was great to hear about roles available within UX and I enjoyed the opportunity to have my portfolio reviewed by Helen West.”
